To give you a little idea of my background, in 2018, following 15 years as a writer, I decided to make the move to become a psychologist; embarking upon an MSc and volunteering for Crisis Text Line and Cruse Bereavement charity. In 2020 I was accepted onto the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at the University of East London, of which I have happily, recently completed the third and final year.
Currently awaiting viva, this course provided me with three years’ NHS experience as a trainee counselling psychologist; working with depression, anxiety, long-term health problems, addictions, personality disorders, bereavement and psychosexual issues.
my theoretical orientation
Through my studies and career to date, I have come to adopt an assimilative approach to therapy. I tend to predominantly draw upon psychodynamic theory, where focus is on the psychological roots of emotional suffering. More specifically, I utilise attachment theory, a psychodynamic-informed approach which examines the connections between an infant's early experiences of attachment with primary caregivers, and the impact this has on the infant's capacity to establish healthy emotional and physical bonds as an adult.
After exploring from a psychodynamic perspective, I typically begin to incorporate more practical interventions, such as those informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In a nutshell, this looks at changing the automatic negative thoughts that can exacerbate our emotional difficulties. I also tend to draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). While the former seeks to help a person accept what is out of their personal control and commit to action that improves and enriches their life, the latter works to aid mental and emotional healing by encouraging a person to be compassionate toward themselves and others.
Ultimately, in line with the principles of Counselling Psychology, my goal is to facilitate growth and the actualisation of your potential. If this sounds good so far, feel free to contact me to arrange a 15-minute, free consultation.
